Lyman didn’t move to avoid it. The force pushed him back half a step. Pain spread across his face, and he tasted iron as blood filled his mouth.
“Is that enough?” he asked, wiping the corner of his mouth. The blood against his skin looked vivid in the pale light. “If not, go ahead. A few more punches won’t matter. Taking a hit over a woman isn’t a bad deal p>
Kyson’s expression twisted. His fist stayed clenched, trembling with restraint. He had never imagined standing opposite Lyman like this.
Lyman had always kept his emotions sealed tight, unreadable to everyone around him. Seeing him standing here over a woman felt surreal — especially when that woman had never returned his feelings.

Lyman studied her for a moment, his gaze lingering, then closed his eyes without responding.
Neither of them spoke for the rest of the drive.
When they returned to Mountain View Residence, Kailey headed straight upstairs and took a shower. Later, she came down to get some water.
The house was quiet — no voices, no footsteps, only a faint glow slipping through the crack of the study door. Lyman was still awake.
She glanced at it briefly, then looked away and set her glass down. Whether he slept or stayed up all night had nothing to do with her. As long as they could exist under the same roof without conflict, that was enough.
Perhaps because she had seen Kyson, Kailey slept deeply that night. When morning came, she woke right at seven.
