Confusion greeted her when she opened her eyes, and for a moment she couldn’t tell if the dream had truly ended.
Then sound snapped her fully awake. Excitement bounced through Max’s whole body as he dropped a ball near her knees and pawed at her for attention.

Max was unable to speak, yet that strange dream left Kailey with an unshakable heaviness pressing against her heart.
It had been a long time since she last heard anything related to the Ward family. Had the two men searching the mountain uncovered anything at all?

Lost in these thoughts, she went back to her bedroom and switched on Kyson’s phone. Dozens of notifications crowded the screen — mostly office chats, along with a smaller thread shared by his closest circle. She locked the screen, then unlocked it. Then did it again. And again.
At last, she found Devin’s contact and placed the call.

She understood how occupied he was. Receiving occasional updates from Devin and knowing he was safe had been enough — she didn’t want to distract him further.
“I’ll wrap things up here as soon as possible. When I return, I’ll pick you up from Lyman’s place. Does that sound good?” His words carried both guilt and gentle reassurance, almost like he was comforting a child. “Take care of yourself p>

She was just about to raise the matter weighing on her when another voice came through the phone — a woman, her tone mild and respectful. “Mr. Blake, the client is still waiting p>
“I’m speaking with my wife,” Kyson responded. “Ask them to wait a little longer p>
“You should go. I’ll end the call,” Kailey said before he could continue.
She could always raise the matter once he was back. He was overwhelmed with work abroad, and she didn’t want to burden him now.
After sitting in silence for a while, she slipped the phone away and stepped out of the room. “I’m heading out,” she said.
The bodyguard froze, clearly unprepared for such a sudden announcement.
Kailey didn’t bother explaining. She walked straight past him toward the entrance.
