Roughly twenty minutes later, Kyson stepped out of the bathroom.
Across the room, the blanket on the bed rose in a small curve, and Kailey lay turned to her side without moving, as if sleep had already claimed her.
A faint curve touched his mouth. He pivoted toward the mirror, ran a towel through his hair, and hung it neatly back in place before making his way to the bed.
Hearing his approaching footsteps, Kailey clamped her eyes shut. Her pulse slammed against her ribs so hard she thought he might actually hear it.
The mattress dipped when the blanket lifted, and she sensed him sliding in beside her. Careful not to give herself away, she kept her breathing even. Once the click of the switch echoed through the room and darkness settled in, she gradually rolled over.
