The rest of the afternoon passed under the same gray skies that had lingered over the village for days. Devin hadn’t sent any updates. Gregg was nowhere to be found. Aside from keeping Caleigh company, Kailey had nothing else to occupy her time.

Zaria was the sharpest person in the office. She never called without a reason.
Her next words came out quieter. “It’s about Gregg. He wants me to persuade you to stop digging p>
Kailey gave a dry laugh. “If there’s nothing to hide, why fear an investigation? Nervous p>
“Why won’t you be sensible?” Zaria asked, her voice urgent. “Think it through. More than a million in compensation is enough for her to live comfortably. Dragging this out only creates more work. If nothing comes of it, then all of this effort will be pointless p>
Kailey waited until Zaria’s breathing steadied before she spoke. “How can you be so sure we won’t uncover anything p>

“What are you basing that on?” Feelings could blur judgment.
Kailey didn’t want the conversation to spiral, so she lowered her voice. “You can choose to believe Gregg. That’s your decision. But I don’t. So stay out of this. I don’t want you caught in the middle p>
