She wanted to say it didn’t matter. The words never came. Her nose burned, and tears spilled freely, soaking into his collar.
Kyson felt his chest tighten until it hurt — as though something were crushing his heart, stealing the air from his lungs. He pulled her closer, holding her as if he could anchor her there forever.

It was just… boring.” The light tone she forced into her words sounded more like a gentle complaint than an expression of pain. It nearly broke him.
Kyson didn’t answer. He lifted her face with both hands in the dim stairwell.
His lips brushed her forehead. Then her eyes. Then her nose. At last, he kissed her lips.
Tears clung to the kiss. The taste was bitter and salty as their breaths tangled together. Kailey rose onto her toes and leaned into him, giving herself over without hesitation. Heat gathered between them and pressed against her chest, making it hard to breathe.

Kailey pressed her lips together, then finally asked the question she’d been holding in. “Can you tell me what’s going on?” She hesitated, then softened her voice. “I know you’re doing this for me. I trust you have your reasons — I really do. But I’m scared.” Scared she wouldn’t see him again. Scared something would go wrong. Trust alone couldn’t quiet those fears.
Silence settled between them. In the darkness, she couldn’t see his face — only the sound of his steady breathing, controlled and restrained.
