“More or less,” Kailey answered, completely missing the shift in his expression. She carried the breakfast over to the table and opened the containers. “The exams aren’t a big deal for me—I’ve done plenty of similar problems before. Either way, studying beats sitting around doing nothing, so I’ll keep at it p>
Watching her act so naturally, Kyson could only let out a quiet, internal sigh. He nodded lightly and took a seat beside her.
They had just finished eating when the doorbell rang.
Kailey walked over and opened the door to find a staff member from the property management standing outside.
“Good morning. Are you Mr. Blake’s wife?” the man asked politely. “Our building is celebrating its fifth anniversary this Sunday afternoon, and we’re hosting a small event for residents. We wanted to ask if you’d be available to join us p>
Being referred to as Kyson’s wife caught Kailey completely off guard. Still, they would be married soon enough. She didn’t bother to correct him. Heat rushed to her face as she answered somewhat awkwardly, “Yes, I’m free p>
The staff member brightened and handed her an invitation. “Wonderful. We’d be delighted to have you p>
Still slightly stunned, Kailey closed the door and turned around to find Kyson finishing the last of his meal. Noticing the absent look on her face, he frowned lightly. “Who was that p>
“Just someone from the property management p>

She left out the part about how she had been addressed.
Curiosity flickered in Kyson’s eyes as he reached over, took the invitation from her hand, and unfolded it.
Printed neatly across the card were the words “Dear Mrs. Blake,” with the event clearly marked as exclusive to female residents.
A subtle smile tugged at his lips before he handed it back. His voice stayed calm. “If your schedule allows, you should go. It’s good to keep friendly relations here p>

After changing his clothes, Kyson headed to the office, leaving the apartment quiet again.
With time to spare, Kailey contacted a logistics company and arranged for some of her luggage to be shipped ahead to Aslesall. She had barely finished when Felicity called.
“You’re leaving soon, so you have to go shopping with me. I don’t care what excuse you have—even if the country is on the brink of collapse, cancel everything and come out right now p>
Left with no room to argue, Kailey changed into something suitable and headed out.
“Things are finally different for you,” Felicity said as they walked side by side, looping her arm through Kailey’s. “Do you remember how it used to be? You had to let your uncle know every time you stepped outside, like a child asking permission. Good thing it was just a crush. And lucky for you, he never felt the same. If you two had actually ended up together, your life would have been genuinely difficult p>
A light laugh escaped Kailey. “You’re making it sound worse than it was p>
Still, the memories surfaced. Ryan had always controlled her movements, even setting curfews when she was in university. At the time, she had been so devoted to him that she had mistaken control for care. Only now did she understand that loving someone should never mean surrendering your independence or sense of self.
