Something had clearly gone wrong between Kailey and Kyson in the span of a single night. Karol needed no more than a few minutes to be certain of that.
Once Kailey finished talking, she reached out, took the bowl from Karol’s hands, avoided her gaze, and scooped porridge from the pot for herself. Karol studied her in silence, her look lingering longer than necessary, before muttering under her breath and turning toward the master bedroom.
She lifted her hand to knock, but the door opened from the inside before she had the chance. Kyson’s tall, straight-backed figure filled the doorway, though Karol had no interest in appreciating his build at the moment.
“Kyson, did you make Kailey upset?” she asked in a low voice, her brows drawn together.

The memory of Kailey’s expression from the night before flashed through Kyson’s mind, and he chose not to answer. That hesitation told Karol everything she needed to know.
Letting out an uneasy sigh, she scolded him, “What exactly is wrong with you? Kailey has only been here a few days, and you’re already showing her this side of yourself? If she leaves because of this, you’ll regret it.” Remembering the promise she had made to Irene, Karol felt an urgent need to push her plans forward. Depending on Kyson alone was clearly useless.
Having barely slept the night before, Kyson felt Karol’s words pound against his already aching head. He rubbed his temples and replied, “Fine. I’ll make it up to her p>
“So that’s all you intend to do?” Karol whispered anxiously, lowering her voice in case Kailey might hear. “You need to cherish her and treat her with genuine respect. She’s your partner, not some client you calm down when it’s convenient p>
After spending decades with the Blake family, Karol had long been regarded as one of them, which gave her the freedom to speak without restraint. She looked at Kyson the way a mother would look at her own son. “You know very well that if your mother finds out you upset Kailey, she won’t let you off easily p>
Kyson had no response. He had barely said anything at all, yet Karol was already on the verge of turning it into a full lecture on values and responsibility.
They walked toward the dining room together. Breakfast was already laid out on the table, and Kailey looked up with an easy smile. “Morning p>
“Morning,” Kyson answered.
He wanted to explain what had happened the night before, but Karol’s presence made it impossible. All he could do was look at Kailey, hoping his expression would convey how earnest and anxious he felt. Kailey avoided meeting his eyes head-on, but she understood him perfectly — he didn’t want Karol to know. They were about to be married, and it would not have been appropriate for others to know he had feelings for someone else.
Kailey continued eating, then lifted her brows at him with a faint smile. That small gesture eased Kyson’s tension. At least she didn’t seem very angry. For now, the situation still felt within control.
