She had tried to keep her eyes open. Nerves kept her wired, yet her body gave out before she could stop it.
Nora watched her closely for a brief moment, her expression sharp and playful. Then she lowered her voice. “I prepared a gift for you p>
Her fingers flew across her phone, and a knowing smile curved her lips — the kind that promised trouble. “All set p>
Kailey blinked, her head feeling pleasantly light. “What kind of gift p>
“You’ll find out soon.” Nora winked and reached out to pinch her cheek. “Stay right here. I’m having Rayden arrange a room for you. There’s no reason for you to head back tonight p>
Kailey almost said she could call a car. Then she thought about how everyone was staying, and how nice it would be to have lunch together the next day. Staying over made sense. She remained on the couch alone, sipping without much thought — probably more than she should have.

Kyson let out a quiet laugh and leaned back, one arm stretched along the back of the couch, the other pressed against his temple. “Not really. But whatever they poured me feels strange. It’s warm p>

Kyson stiffened. Understanding hit him slowly. He straightened, his jaw tightening. “Those idiots p>

She didn’t finish. Nora swept back in and hooked her arm through Kailey’s, casting Kyson a sharp look. “Leave? Don’t be absurd. We’re all staying. I’m having lunch with her tomorrow.” Before Kyson could say anything, she turned to Kailey and tugged her forward. “Come on. Your gift’s already waiting. If you’re tired, just go upstairs. She flashed a wink that looked innocent and dangerous at the same time.
Kailey and Kyson were guided toward the elevator with little room to argue. Lambert stepped in first and held the door, bowing with exaggerated flair. “After you p>

The doors closed behind them with a soft click.
Inside the elevator, Kailey and Kyson looked at each other. Neither spoke. After a moment, she slowly opened the bag.
