Kailey’s heart jumped — but before she could answer, a male voice came from the entrance. “No one threw you out on the street. What’s there to complain about p>
All three turned toward the door. Kyson walked in with steady steps, his suit jacket resting over his arm.
Kailey let out a quiet breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. Finally, he was home.
Irene gave him a light scolding. “Don’t talk like that. Benny just got back. His brother isn’t around, so we can take a little extra care of him p>
Kyson gave a short laugh. “He can book a flight anytime. I don’t see what’s so hard about that.” Then he looked at Benny, his expression turning serious. “Your brother will be back tomorrow. Don’t come here to bother my wife p>
Benny opened his mouth but couldn’t find a reply.
Kailey tried to speak, but Kyson gently guided her toward the dining room. “Benny always has an angle. Don’t agree to anything because you feel sorry for him p>
“But your mom p>
“You don’t have to worry about her.” He tightened his hold on her hand. “This is your home. You get to decide who stays. You don’t need to adjust for anyone p>
Back in the living room, Benny lowered his head. His expression gave nothing away.
Irene felt uneasy, thinking she might have upset him. She touched her nose awkwardly. “Benny, if you really don’t want to stay at the hotel p>

She shook her head. “No, that’s not what I meant. I could stay at the hotel with you. If you don’t want to be alone, we could book a suite p>
The disappointment showed on his face. “That won’t be necessary. My brother’s back tomorrow anyway p>
Irene watched him leave, feeling that something wasn’t quite right. He had always been close to Kyson — but he had never acted this attached before.
After dinner, Kyson received a sudden call about work. He left soon after and took Benny along with him. Kailey stood by the second-floor window and watched from above as the two of them talked while walking toward the car. The sight made her smile.
She didn’t understand why Benny seemed so opposed to her, yet she couldn’t deny the ease between him and Kyson. There was a closeness there she couldn’t step into.
The thought faded when she realized she hadn’t spoken to Felicity in a long time. She opened her phone and sent her a message.
Before Felicity responded, her phone rang. It was Lionel. He asked to meet the next day.
“I’m free tomorrow,” he said. “I’ll take you to see the mountain your mother left you. You don’t have other plans, do you p>
“No. Just tell me the time, and I’ll drive over p>
They settled on a time and ended the call. Still, a faint unease stayed with Kailey. She stared at her phone for a while until a video call from Felicity came through.
“I figured you were too busy enjoying married life to think of me. Guess I still exist p>
