Words stalled on Dagmar’s tongue for a second before she crossed her legs on the couch. “Research, obviously. Do you even remember my major? I study geology. That mountain hasn’t been touched, and the land shows signs of heavy tectonic movement from long ago. It deserves proper study p>
“Why go through the trouble of borrowing it? If research is all you want, you can start anytime,” Kailey said.
A bright spark flickered through Dagmar’s clear eyes as she looked up. “You’re quicker than I expected, Kailey p>
Silence was the only answer Kailey gave her.
“Yes, I could research it without asking.” Dagmar tipped her chin up and wrapped herself in a proud air. “I still want to borrow it. Just say yes or no p>

Shock locked Dagmar’s face in place. Stillness hung for a second before she said, “Repeat that p>

The smile resting on Kailey’s lips shattered Dagmar’s composure, and she shot to her feet. “Have you lost your senses, Kailey? My father begged for so many years, and you refused him, yet you hand it to me without hesitation? I thought you were clever, and now you turn around and make me look like an idiot p>

“Why deny my father if you were going to give it away? You could have placed it in his hands from the start. You p>

The rest of Dagmar’s outburst died in her throat. Heat rushed into her face as she shot a hard glare at the woman in front of her.
A soft smile touched Kailey’s lips as she reached out and took her hand. “Sit down first p>
Reluctance followed Dagmar as she dropped back onto the seat, her stare locked on Kailey.
“The mountain is registered under my name now. As you mentioned, I have no intention of developing it or putting it to use. If your goal is geological research, I have no objection—I trust you won’t cross any legal lines.” Kailey’s tone was gentle and reasonable, yet Dagmar’s face grew even darker.
Unease crept into her voice. “What if I strip it of everything valuable? Suppose there’s a rare mine there. The timber alone could sell for a fortune, couldn’t it?” Expectation showed plainly in her eyes as she waited for Kailey to react.
“Then go ahead, if you believe you can handle it,” Kailey said with a small shrug. “You probably don’t know this, but when I was kidnapped before, your father paid thirty million to bring me back p>
“That’s what an uncle is supposed to do,” Dagmar retorted. She turned her face away, irritation flickering across her features without a clear target.
Quiet stretched between them before Kailey spoke again. “Tomorrow I’ll ask a lawyer to prepare an agreement. You’re eighteen already, so your signature will make it legal. After that, you’re free to use it however you want p>
