Even though he and his wife had adopted Kailey, it was Ryan who had grown up by her side. Ryan was close to her in age; they had spent years together, and that kind of closeness could easily blur boundaries. Aleena had hinted at things before, but Sawyer hadn’t paid much attention back then. Now he realized that Kailey wasn’t the one unable to let go.
For a brief moment, he felt a pang of sympathy for his younger brother. Then he looked at Kyson and spoke in a softer tone. “As her father, I only ask one thing. No matter what, please think about Kailey’s feelings. She hasn’t experienced as much of the world as you have. Take good care of her p>
In that moment, Sawyer felt the full weight of fatherhood settle on his shoulders. Pride and sorrow mixed in his chest in a way he couldn’t quite explain.

“Not at all,” Kailey said honestly. Ryan’s burdens belonged to him alone. She had never blamed him for what happened in the past.
Shirley turned her head and looked at the young woman beside her. She appeared gentle, yet her eyes held a quiet sharpness. Kailey wasn’t as fragile as others assumed—she understood more than she let on.
Shirley reached over and tapped her lightly on the nose. “No matter what happens, listen to your own heart. Don’t let Ryan’s situation weigh you down, and don’t make a decision you’ll regret later. Do you understand p>
