Only after they moved farther into the crowd did Kailey realize she had been holding her breath. She slowly let it out. Her hand rose to her face, as if she needed to confirm that what she had seen was real.
It was.
There was no misunderstanding. No illusion. She had braced herself when the news broke — she thought she was prepared. Yet seeing them together with her own eyes left her hollow.
Kailey lowered her head and forced herself not to look again. Her fingertips trembled slightly. Without drawing attention, she stood and walked toward the restroom.

Once inside, she turned on the faucet and let the water run. She scrubbed the back of her hand again and again until the skin reddened. Only then did she turn off the tap.
