From a short distance away, Karol observed their natural ease with one another and quietly snapped two photos on her phone. They looked so perfectly suited that anyone would assume they were made for each other. She immediately sent the pictures to Kyson’s mother, adding a heart-eyed emoji for emphasis.

The mention of food caught Kailey’s attention immediately, and her expression brightened. She had always enjoyed coming to Kyson’s place, and a large part of that was Karol’s cooking, which easily rivaled anything served at a luxury restaurant. Without holding back, she lingered a little longer, chatted some more, and eventually headed back to her room in a cheerful mood.
Her phone suddenly vibrated with a flood of notifications from the friends’ group chat. It caught her off guard — everyone had been busy lately, and conversations had been limited to quick check-ins. It had been a while since the chat felt this alive.
She slipped off her coat, dropped onto the couch, and opened the voice messages one by one. Only then did she realize the topic revolved around her.
