“There’s a lot you still don’t know about me. We have time. You can discover it little by little.” Soft steam rose from the pan as Kyson stirred the vegetables with steady, unhurried movements.
Silence settled between them. Kailey studied the clean lines of his profile, the kitchen light tracing his sharp features. Earlier, she had assumed their marriage would be nothing more than a convenient arrangement—two friends coexisting without obligation or emotional investment. Lately, though, a quiet thought kept surfacing. Sharing a lifetime with him no longer sounded unbearable.
Though his technique lacked professional polish, Kyson cooked with careful precision, and the fragrant dishes emerging from the pan looked surprisingly appetizing. With a small, unconscious smile, Kailey moved to set the plates and utensils on the table.

She inhaled slowly, reined in her wandering thoughts, and finally reached toward the stubborn knot at his waist. The simple tie refused to loosen under her fingers, the fabric seeming to cinch tighter with every careful tug, as if the small loop had a will of its own and was enjoying her frustration.
An odd warmth crept through her chest—a quiet, unbidden illusion that she and Kyson had already shared this home for years, like an ordinary couple drifting through an ordinary evening.
The intimacy of that thought sent a rosy flush blooming across her cheeks.
