“So you can report us afterward?” he shot back.

Kailey said nothing, her eyes glistening as if tears were about to spill.
Slowly, the three men closed in and steered her toward a nearby building. At the machine, she withdrew five thousand in cash and handed it over.

The threat registered in an instant. Kailey spun and tried to run—but a sharp yank from behind caught her by the hair and stopped her cold.

Hopelessness surged through her—but at that exact moment, a cool, unhurried voice cut in from behind.
“Kailey, classes ended a while ago. Why aren’t you home yet? What’s going on here p>
The sound of that voice brought Kailey immediate relief.
Keeping her composure, she turned her head and called out, “Kyson p>
Then she faced the group and said evenly, “He’s here to pick me up. You should go p>
She wanted to keep the situation from turning violent, even though Kyson’s arrival had already steadied her nerves considerably.
The thugs exchanged glances, looking from her to the tall figure beside her, then finally turned to leave.
“Hold on.” Kyson stepped forward, placed the carton of milk into Kailey’s hands, and fixed the group with a level stare. His tone dropped, sharp and cold. “Leave the money p>
They stopped. Looked at each other. Then burst out laughing.
