Kailey still didn’t react. The doctor reached out and lifted her hand gently. Swelling distorted the skin, and the injury looked unusual.
“What happened?” she asked.
“I hit someone,” Kailey replied. “Forget the police. Can you deliver a message for me instead p>
The injury on Kailey’s hand hadn’t broken the skin. Treatment was simple and quick, limited to applying a medicated cream.
The doctor stepped out not long after. A bodyguard studied her carefully, his gaze sweeping over her twice. “She didn’t say anything unusual, did she p>
“What could she say?” Her expression was calm and natural. “The exam is finished. There’s nothing serious. Use the ointment for two days and the swelling should go down p>
The bodyguard nodded. “I’ll take you back p>
“There’s no need.” Her voice stayed steady. “I have relatives nearby. I can get there myself. May I have my phone back p>
Seeing nothing suspicious, the bodyguard handed it over. “Thanks for coming. I’ll reach out if we need you again p>
She inclined her head, adjusted the medical bag on her shoulder, and left the villa at a brisk pace. After she turned two corners and finally stepped out of sight, she released a quiet breath. She checked her surroundings, making sure no one was nearby, and pulled out her phone.

Opening her palm, she revealed a string of numbers written across her skin.
She had barely tapped in the first two digits when a hand reached in from the side and snatched the phone away.

The doctor, Laney Becker, stared at the bodyguard in front of her, stunned into silence.
Relief washed over him. If Lyman hadn’t warned him, this would have turned into a disaster. His face hardened. “So your relatives aren’t around after all. We’ll have someone escort you back p>
Kailey had known from the start that reaching out for help would never escape Lyman’s attention. He observed everything too closely and planned too carefully — there was no chance he wouldn’t notice what she was attempting. Even so, she refused to let that last trace of hope die.
She scheduled another checkup for two days later. When the day arrived, she told Lyman that her palm still ached and that she was worried she might have damaged a bone.
He studied her in silence. His gaze lingered longer than usual, heavy and probing. Then he gave no response at all and instructed a bodyguard to summon a doctor.
Relief sparked briefly in her chest. For a moment, she thought she had slipped past him.
That feeling vanished the instant the door opened. The doctor who entered was a man. Her heart sank.
There was nothing left to guess. Lyman had known all along.
The image of the female doctor flashed through her mind, and Kailey’s face drained of color. Had she caused trouble for someone else?
