Sharp laughter burst from Kailey without warning.
Puzzlement crossed Candice’s face — until she noticed the humor in Kailey’s eyes and understood. The insult had circled back. She was the one being called insane.
Color drained from Candice’s cheeks. In just a short while, she had lost her composure because of this woman. She squeezed her eyes shut, opened them again, and swallowed a mouthful of coffee to crush the anger rising inside.
“Kyson and I are leaving the country to get married,” she said. “If you have any sense, sign the divorce papers willingly and spare everyone the mess p>
A faint tremor passed through Kailey’s eyelids as her gaze lifted. “I didn’t catch that p>
For a split second, Candice felt as if she were being watched by a predator. The sharpness in Kailey’s stare carried the promise of violence — as if she could be torn apart without warning. Strain pulled Candice’s lips into a brittle smile. “Did I speak too fast? You don’t even need to divorce him. There are no limits overseas p>
“Kyson will not marry you,” Kailey said, her voice flat with cold certainty.
“Your opinion changes nothing.” Candice crossed her legs and wore a clear air of triumph. “Kyson already gave his approval. Still, this doesn’t concern you. Just look at your current situation.” Her eyes traveled over the alert guards and the towering walls that sealed the property. “You’re like a bird in a cage. If escape were possible, you would have done it already. If Kyson could rescue you, he would have acted by now. Since neither happened, this must be the arrangement fate prefers p>
Stillness claimed Kailey’s face as her gaze dropped, her thoughts hidden behind that silence.
