Between his long fingers, his phone rotated in a lazy, practiced spin, the device catching faint glints of dim light with each effortless turn.
From the bed across the room, a faint, fragile murmur slipped into the darkness.

Dressed in the same sleepwear she had worn at home, Kailey lay tangled in the blankets, her bare legs hanging loosely over the mattress’s edge. During the night, she had shifted and twisted unconsciously.
Confusion clouded her mind for several lingering seconds before clarity slowly returned and she pushed herself upright. A dull soreness throbbed along her neck, the ache so sharp it felt as though an unseen blow had landed there.
While massaging the tender spot, her unfocused eyes finally lifted — and she noticed the man seated across from her, his presence radiating a chilling, unmistakable coldness.
