Zaria rushed in behind her and froze when she saw who stood in the yard. Her breathing faltered. She tried to smile but couldn’t. “Why are you here p>
Gregg’s eyes flashed with surprise before he smoothed it over with a polite smile. He adjusted his collar, pressing his tongue lightly against his teeth. When he looked up again, he appeared calm and refined. “I didn’t expect to see you here. What brings you to this town?” The question sounded less like curiosity and more like a probe.
Kailey met his gaze evenly. “We’re here to see Caleigh. And you p>

“Work,” Gregg replied without hesitation.
Caleigh slammed the broom in her hand against the ground. “I’ve already told you — I won’t cooperate. I’m waiting for the official investigation report. You can bring all the money you want. I won’t sign anything. Leave p>
Gregg’s expression didn’t change, but the smile on his lips turned cold. “If you keep rejecting this, you may end up with nothing. Is that what you want p>
The man beside him added quickly, “Mr. Molina came here personally. You should appreciate that p>
Kailey stepped forward, but Zaria moved before she could speak.
“Gregg, come outside. I need to ask you something p>
At the doorway, Zaria faced him. “Tell me the truth. Did your company cause Caleigh’s husband’s death p>
Kailey didn’t know what had been said outside. When Zaria came back in, hesitation was written all over her face. She drew Kailey aside and lowered her voice. “Caleigh’s husband’s death was an accident. Gregg is just doing his job. Maybe we should try to persuade her p>
Kailey pressed her lips together. She couldn’t understand how Gregg had managed to influence Zaria in such a short time.
Even so, she said quietly, “Zaria, don’t forget we’re here for our own project too p>
Zaria’s eyes narrowed in confusion. She didn’t understand why Kailey, who was usually so easygoing, was suddenly being so firm. She hesitated before replying, “It doesn’t conflict. If we convince Caleigh to accept the settlement, we can move forward with our project. Everyone benefits. Isn’t that better p>
“It doesn’t work that way.” Kailey shook her head. “Caleigh has her own reasons. We don’t get to choose for her. And she won’t listen to us if we push her p>
Without giving Zaria time to argue, Kailey walked back toward the people still standing in the courtyard. “There’s no reason for all of you to stay here. I’ll speak with Caleigh alone. If you keep crowding her yard and upsetting her, I’ll have to report it p>
The men exchanged uncertain looks before turning toward Gregg.
Believing Zaria had already persuaded Kailey, Gregg adjusted his cuffs and offered a polished smile. “I’ll leave this matter to you, Ms. Evans p>
One by one, the group left the courtyard.
