With the matter of the amulet’s restoration settled, a weight lifted from Kailey’s shoulders and relief washed through her. Back home, she soaked in a warm bath, then curled up on the sofa with snacks and a movie.
Before the film reached its ending, her friend Felicity Morgan called.

Shock flickered across Kailey’s face. Ryan was actually looking for her? Only then did she remember blocking his calls and messages the night before when he had become unbearable, and she still hadn’t unblocked him.

Given how close they were, it made sense that Ryan would try Felicity first.
“He absolutely did,” Felicity said with a groan. “He was pounding on my door at six in the morning. I thought, great, some dramatic romantic emergency—but when I opened the door, it turned out to be your insufferable uncle instead p>
“Alright, calm down. I’ll deal with him,” Kailey said, pressing two fingers to her temple. After ending the call, she unblocked Ryan and sent a message.

Almost immediately, a video call request popped up on her screen.
After a brief pause, Kailey declined it and switched to a voice call instead.
The moment it connected, his voice came through sharp and raw. “Kailey, you’ve gotten really daring! What do you think you’re doing, running away from home? Get back here right now p>
She pulled the phone instinctively from her ear and waited until the yelling slowed before letting out a tired breath. “I’m already past the point of turning back p>
Her answer stunned him into silence. He had spent the entire night convincing himself she was doing this just to provoke him—she had pulled similar things before, storming off to a friend’s place for a few days before quietly returning. But this time she had actually moved out. Did she really think this would frighten him?
A cold laugh escaped him. “So you want to push this further? Fine. Since you’re so eager to be independent, I’ll let you experience it properly. Starting tomorrow, your card is frozen—you’re on your own. I’ve already told the branch office not to give you any special treatment. You’ll start as an ordinary intern. When you finally understand what you did wrong, then you can come back and talk to me p>
He ended the call before she could respond. She had gone too far this time, and he intended to let hardship teach her what he couldn’t.
Staring at the darkened screen, Kailey was left without a single word.
