Kailey barely glanced at it. “A foreign license won’t work here. You need an international permit p>
He opened his mouth to argue, then stopped — because he clearly had no idea how to refute that. He stood there stiffly, frustration written all over his young face.
Under the sunlight, though, he looked almost radiant.
For a second, Kailey thought he must have grown up sheltered and well-protected, the kind of person who had never had to question his own confidence. The thought reminded her of Kyson.
She dropped her gaze, hid a faint smile, and walked around to the driver’s side.

Kyson had messaged her about lunch. She glanced through the windshield at Benny, still standing outside with a stubborn look on his face, then replied: “Having lunch with Benny at the restaurant you took me to last time p>
The passenger door swung open and Benny climbed in. His body went on autopilot for a second — he started to stretch his leg out the way he had before, then caught himself. He dropped it back down and sat still.
Kailey had to bite back a laugh. Benny didn’t respond to softness. He responded to limits. Give him space and he’d take the whole room.
“Seatbelt,” she said.
“Okay.” He clicked the seatbelt into place and slouched back, folding his arms across his chest. His tone carried a lazy sort of arrogance. “Your job can’t possibly cover a car like this. So who bought it for you p>
“Why does that concern you p>
“Can’t I ask p>
Kailey didn’t answer right away. A few seconds passed before she said evenly, “It’s not mine p>
“Then where did it come from? Don’t tell me you’re seeing some rich guy just for the money. You don’t seem like someone who’d do that p>
Her jaw tightened. The shift in the air was immediate, and Benny went quiet on instinct.
“Driving a nice car doesn’t automatically mean someone is chasing money. It could belong to a friend. It could be rented. You don’t get to throw around assumptions like that. It’s rude. Do you understand p>
His lips pressed flat. “So which is it? Rented or borrowed p>
“Neither p>
He frowned. “Then p>
“It belongs to my husband.” A small smile crept onto her lips before she could stop it.
Benny’s head snapped toward her. The surprise on his face wasn’t subtle. She didn’t need to look at him to sense the change. Just as she opened her mouth to say more, he turned away and faced forward again.
The rest of the drive passed in silence.
When they reached the restaurant, Kailey parked and glanced to her side. He had fallen asleep.
His head leaned slightly against the window, body curled in on itself, arms folded tight across his chest as though guarding something. Even asleep, he looked striking — his features sharp and almost flawless, the blond hair making him stand out with an unreal edge. There was a coolness about him that didn’t quite match his age.
And yet, he acted around her like they’d known each other for years.
