Devin slipped out, leaving Kyson alone with a heavy silence and too many thoughts swirling in his head.
At first, suspicion had fallen on Lionel for Kailey’s abduction. During the Evans family’s crisis, he was nowhere to be found, yet now he could toss out an offer of thirty million without blinking. The idea that he was simply being a caring relative didn’t add up. His actions seemed more like an attempt to trade money for something bigger — like the mountain Kailey’s mother had left her. If Kailey took his generosity at face value, she might even hand over her inheritance willingly.
Still, the kidnapper’s disappearance left no clues behind, and if Lionel had orchestrated everything, something about it still didn’t quite fit. He had no allies in the area, and nobody would take such a huge risk on his behalf. So if not Lionel — then who?
Even though today was supposed to be the day she got her marriage certificate, Kailey treated it like any other ordinary workday. She stayed busy until evening. Once her work was finally done, she rolled her neck and headed for a break.
