The man in front of him was much younger, yet Quentin could tell immediately that Kyson was far from ordinary. Kailey rolled her eyes. She circled around the front of the car and slid into the passenger seat. Once she buckled in, she stared ahead for a moment before saying, “He gives me a strange feeling. He always seems distracted, like his thoughts are somewhere else p>
What unsettled her most was the way he looked at her — as if his gaze passed straight through her, as if she were only a shadow of someone else.
Kyson focused on the road, his voice calm and even. “People like him tend to be that way. Drifters who can fit in anywhere usually carry stories they don’t talk about, or habits that set them apart p>
Kailey went quiet, then let out a sudden laugh. “I honestly thought you would warn me to stay away from someone like that p>
“Hmm?” Kyson glanced at her briefly, one eyebrow lifting. “Why would I do that?” A soft chuckle escaped him as he returned his attention to the road.
“Kailey, I get jealous sometimes, and that’s normal. It’s instinct. Possessiveness comes with attachment, and I can’t completely suppress that. But who you work with or choose as friends is your decision. I have no authority over that p>
Kailey was just about to feel impressed when he added, “That said, I trust you know how to keep proper boundaries p>
The remark landed with more weight than she expected. Without really thinking, she murmured, “And what if I didn’t p>
“I would lock you up,” Kyson answered firmly.
