Amusement flickered across Kyson’s face. Leaning closer, he pressed a light kiss to the tip of her nose, then placed the bouquet in her arms and suddenly crouched down. In one swift motion, he lifted her onto his back.

Their playful bickering continued as he carried her toward the parking lot.
Neither of them noticed the shadow lingering at the corner of the building, watching silently as they disappeared from sight.
During the drive, Kyson asked Kailey to phone home and mention they wouldn’t be back for dinner.

In the rearview mirror, her stunned little pout was visible, drawing a lazy chuckle from him. “What we eat isn’t the point — it’s who’s sitting across from me that matters. Since a friend recommended it, I wanted you to taste it too. And if you honestly don’t like it, we’ll just go somewhere else p>
Streetlights drifted past the windows, scattering soft shadows across his features. As Kailey studied his profile in the muted glow, his face seemed almost unreal, like a painting blurred by motion. A faint haze crept into her thoughts, leaving her momentarily unsteady.
