In the dim cellar light, his features looked sharper, and his eyes were harder to read.
After a moment, she spoke again. “You’re not stupid. Maybe you did notice Kyson coming here before — mixing a little truth into a lie makes it sound more convincing. But if he never walked up to the house, how do you know he was watching it p>
A flicker of irritation crossed his eyes. She caught it instantly. Her lips curved slightly. “You came straight here without wandering. That means you either knew I was inside, or you already knew something about this place.” Otherwise, why would he take such a risk? If someone had caught him, it would’ve caused a scene, and the police wouldn’t have stayed out of it. Nothing about that sounded worth the trouble.
He let out a sharp laugh. “You think you’re the only one who can figure things out? If you’re so confident in your guesses, why even ask me? Just assume I dropped by to see how miserable you are. I’ve seen enough — I’m satisfied.” Yet when he looked at her more closely, she didn’t resemble someone trapped or suffering at all. Her face held a healthy glow, and there wasn’t a hint of distress in her expression.
The more he thought about it, the more it sank in. He’d come all this way for nothing.
Kailey still couldn’t tell how much of what he said was true. Ever since Benny had shown up in her life, he had been impossible to read — in some ways, even harder to figure out than Quentin.

For a split second, his pupils shrank and his breathing hitched. He recovered quickly, but it was enough. Before he could respond, footsteps approached from outside the door. The bodyguards had arrived.
“If you managed to sneak in, your brother can do the same,” she said quietly. “Tell him to meet me here tomorrow night at this time. He won’t turn me down, will he p>
Benny parted his lips, but nothing came out.
She knew he’d heard every word. Turning toward the door, she knocked twice. “I’m here p>
Within seconds, the lock clicked and the bodyguards pulled it open.
As she stepped out, she glanced back from the corner of her eye — but he was nowhere in sight. Before leaving, she made sure the door stayed slightly ajar, just enough to make it seem untouched.
The next day dragged on as if time itself had slowed. When the sun finally dipped below the horizon, the city slipped into night, cloaked in shadows and flickering lights.
Kailey sat by the floor-to-ceiling window with a book in her hands. She flipped one page. Then another.
