“Candice and I made a deal to split you and Kyson up. She wants him. I want you. I don’t really care whether you agree or not. You understand the sort of man I am. Anything I decide to claim — whether it is a thing or a person — always ends up in my hands. Nothing stays impossible forever. It only looks that way when the price is too small. Never before had Kailey listened to Lyman speak at such length, and each sentence had struck her chest with the force of a blade.
Because of what happened in her youth, she had always held complicated feelings toward him. Now, those feelings had hardened into something closer to hatred.

She stayed inside the villa the entire time, filling the hours with books and paint, aside from the brief walks she took while leading Max outside. Every routine melted into the next until the days lost their edges, and she felt as though her life was quietly draining away somewhere just beyond her reach.
