Kailey looked at her curiously. “What makes you think that p>
“Bosses like him don’t usually cancel once plans are set,” Zaria said with a shrug. “Backing out at the last minute feels like breaking a promise p>
Curiosity sparked in Kailey’s eyes. “Is he married?” From everything she had heard, he sounded fairly young.
“People say he has a wife, but she’s kept completely out of sight,” Zaria replied. “No one really knows the truth. He’s very secretive about it p>
A secret wife? Kailey blinked in mild surprise, then decided not to pursue the topic any further.
Zaria gathered her belongings with a deep breath. “So what now? Since the dinner’s canceled, want to grab something to eat together p>
“Sure,” Kailey agreed easily. She had already mentioned the dinner to Kyson, so there was no reason to turn the invitation down.
The two packed up and headed downstairs, passing Dana just as she stepped out of her office. Her assistant stared after them in quiet amazement. “Zaria and Kailey got close in only two days p>
Dana gave a soft laugh and said nothing. Watching how naturally the two had bonded, an idea quietly began to take shape in her mind.

Not far away, Kailey and Zaria chose a restaurant well known online—a barbecue spot famous for its carefully presented dishes.
“This one’s on me, and don’t even think about fighting me for the bill,” Zaria said, placing the order on the tablet before passing it to the server.
A quiet warmth spread through Kailey’s chest—the particular feeling of having just made her very first friend here.
Catching that expression, Zaria instinctively leaned back. “Why are you looking at me like that? It’s kind of unsettling p>
“It’s nothing,” Kailey replied with a smile. “I just think you’re genuinely kind p>
Zaria let out a laugh. It was impossible to dislike someone as open and sincere as Kailey. “You should be glad it was me you ran into. Someone else might have taken advantage of how nice you are p>
“I’m not that easily fooled,” Kailey replied. “I trust my instincts. You can usually tell what a person is like just from the feeling they give off p>
“There’s some truth to that,” Zaria agreed with a nod, then her tone shifted. “But Kailey, the workplace isn’t like school. People can go to extremes for their own interests. One of the first things you learn out here is not to trust too quickly p>
Kailey had thought through many scenarios and felt reasonably prepared. She gave a small nod. “I’ll remember that p>
Neither of them realized how soon that lesson would prove itself.
Once dinner was over, Kailey offered Zaria a ride home.
Zaria stopped dead when she saw the Porsche. “Is this your car p>
“More or less,” Kailey answered vaguely.
Zaria stared, genuinely puzzled. “If you’re driving something like this, why are you working at Fantasy Fusion?” She had seen enough car reviews to recognize the model instantly.
