Shirley’s death had forced her awake. She didn’t know who was behind it, but she knew one thing — it wasn’t finished. A tricycle losing control like that wasn’t coincidence. Someone was watching. Anyone who stayed near her would be dragged into it.

Kailey drew in a slow breath, a bitter trace of self-mockery rising in her chest. Then she closed her eyes.
The bodyguard drove her straight to the hotel where Lyman was staying. The front desk completed her check-in at once and handed over the room card without delay.

Kailey took the key card and went upstairs without stopping. After showering, she lay down and fell asleep so deeply that she didn’t even hear room service bring her food.

Still heavy with sleep, Kailey kept one hand on the door and made it clear she wasn’t inviting him inside. “Did you come here to stand guard for me?” He’d knocked for that long without a word. What was wrong with him?
Lyman had come planning to comfort her, but looking at her now, she clearly didn’t need it. “If you’re hungry, call the front desk and order something. The restaurant downstairs is still open,” he said.

“Alright.” Kailey noticed the faint shadows beneath his eyes and realized he probably hadn’t rested properly in days. Her tone softened slightly. “You should get some sleep. I’ll go downstairs later and find something to eat p>
Lyman didn’t dwell on it. After looking at her for two quiet seconds, he turned and went back to his room.
Kailey stepped back inside and closed the door.
She looked around the room and quickly found the landline sitting on the desk. She crossed the room and dialed Lambert’s number without hesitation.
