Kyson’s expression shifted in an instant. The warmth drained from his eyes, leaving something darker behind. He lowered the phone, checked the screen to confirm there was no saved name attached to the number, then slowly lifted it back to his ear.
A faint, cold smile curved his lips. “You can’t fall asleep?” he repeated. “You need company?” Each word came out slow and measured, yet the air around him seemed to tighten.
Silence filled the other end for two seconds. Then the call disconnected.
The screen flickered back to the home page before dimming into darkness.
Kyson stared at the phone for a moment, his thumb brushing lightly along its edge. His gaze grew distant, as if a thin fog had settled over it.
After a while, he placed the phone back on the table and picked up his book. He turned a page without really looking at it. Several minutes passed, and he didn’t move to the next one.
Half an hour later, the bathroom door opened. Kailey stepped out in her pajamas, damp hair falling loosely over her shoulders, wrapped in a towel that looked ready to slip at any second.
Kyson’s brow tightened. He rose without a word, walked to the cabinet, and retrieved the hairdryer.
Kailey settled in front of him as if it were the most natural thing in the world, waiting.
The low hum of the dryer filled the room. When she tried to look at him, he gently shifted her hair to one side, blocking her view. He dried the left side carefully, then moved to the right. It didn’t take long — but Kailey could tell he was not in a good mood.
“Kyson,” she called softly.

The moment she said his name, he turned. He had already put the dryer away. His eyes were darker than before, like something restless was pacing behind them.
He walked toward her, one slow step at a time.
There were feelings that didn’t need to be spelled out. When they lingered quietly between two people with no one else around, they carried their own weight.
Earlier, when Kailey stepped out of the bathroom, Kyson had taken only a brief look at her — yet heat had already begun to climb under his skin.
Her hair was dry now.
Without saying anything, he closed the distance between them and pressed her gently against the wall.
Irene and Karol seemed to sense the atmosphere and wisely stayed downstairs. Even so, Kailey didn’t dare make a sound.
Afterward, she sat slumped on the couch, heat lingering on her face, her breathing still not fully settled. She lifted a hand to mess up her hair, then reached for the phone resting beside her.
It was 9:10.
The house was quiet. Outside, nothing stirred. Inside, there was only the faint rush of water from the bathroom and the uneven rhythm of her own heartbeat, loud in her ears.
