Right when their lips were about to meet, a sudden bark broke the moment, and both of them stopped at once.
After a brief pause, Kyson let out the breath he had been holding and turned his head slightly. “Go on and play, Max,” he said in a lowered voice.
Instead of leaving, Max fixed his eyes on them and barked again.
Looking into the dog’s bright, innocent gaze, Kailey burst into laughter and reached over to stroke his head gently. “Max just saved me from an awkward situation. We can’t be mean to him p>
Max puffed out excited little breaths, and when neither of them budged, he clamped onto Kyson’s pant leg and pulled him firmly toward the door.
Small green stems broke through the ground in the yard, and the sunlight cut through the last of the winter cold. The air carried a faint warmth that hadn’t been there days before.
Max tugged Kyson toward the wall and kept barking at the thick patch of greenery.

“Woof!” Max answered without hesitation.
One of Kyson’s brows lifted. Without wasting time, he stepped closer to check.

Concern softened his eyes, and a faint smile touched his face. He squeezed her hand and said, “Relax. If it was dangerous, Max would’ve dealt with it. He wouldn’t call me over for no reason p>
Kailey let go slowly, worry still lingering on her face.
In the end, nothing jumped out from the bushes. Kyson reached in and pulled out a letter.
She frowned. “Who hides a letter in the bushes p>
There was a mailbox right outside the gate. Besides, these days people usually picked up the phone or sent an email when they had something to say — hardly anyone bothered with paper letters anymore.
Kyson glanced at Max, then lowered his eyes to the envelope in his hand. After a brief pause, he said quietly, “They wanted us to find it.” That was why they had placed it where Max would notice. Once he started barking, someone in the house would come out to see what was wrong.
His expression turned serious as he tore the envelope open.

Kailey’s breathing faltered, and unease settled deep in her chest. She looked at Kyson and gave a small nod. He unfolded the letter, revealing two neat lines of flowing script.

It echoed the earlier note that had warned her not to marry him — the tone felt almost identical.
