Private chats and small group threads erupted with discussion, people dragging up some of Dana’s less visible past actions and condemning her almost in unison. Once the gossip ran its course, attention naturally shifted to a new question: who would take Dana’s place? No one had an answer.
Kailey watched the messages quietly, replying only when someone addressed her directly. As for who would become the next team leader, she felt completely indifferent.
That evening, at seven sharp, the sound of a car engine drifted through the yard. Kailey sprang up from the sofa, hurriedly fixed her hair, and slipped on her shoes. She took a few steadying breaths, then paused, confused by her own reaction. Kyson knew her better than almost anyone. He had practically watched her grow up.

When the kitchen door finally shut, she let out the breath she had been unconsciously holding and blinked a few times to steady herself.

Kyson froze. A subtle twitch crossed his brow as a quiet sense of foreboding settled over him. The thought barely lingered before he dismissed it. Even if she was curious, so what? In the end, he had the final say.
