“Who else would I be talking to?” Impatience sharpened her expression. “I’m exhausted and want to lie down. Max needs two hours of exercise or he’ll start acting out, so keep him busy p>
Without waiting for another reply, she turned and went back inside, leaving the guards to stare at each other before reluctantly taking the leash.
In the living room, Kailey paused and checked the yard through the window. The two guards were playing with Max.

She drew a steady breath, then slipped away toward the wine cellar.

Kailey wasn’t in the mood for small talk. “Why are you here p>
The villa felt sealed like a fortress to her, yet Benny wandered through it as if he owned every corner.
The bottle clicked softly against the shelf as he set it down and lounged against the cabinet. “I only came to see how you were doing p>
Doubt settled over Kailey at once. She accepted none of it.
Laughter burst from Benny when he caught her frosty look, his eyes shining with restless energy. “I’m serious about that. Quentin showed up yesterday, right? What did the two of you discuss p>
“You should ask him instead p>
“He refuses to answer me p>
Kailey frowned slightly. What did that have to do with her?
Distance always stretched between them, and every exchange with Benny ended in irritation on both sides. Her voice turned sharp. “If you have nothing important to say, leave before someone catches you here and drags me into trouble p>
“Don’t you feel trapped staying inside this place all day?” Benny stared at the villa as though it were a cage and slowly shook his head. “If I were stuck in here, I’d lose my mind in a single day p>
“Then go to hell p>
Disbelief crossed his face, and his eyes nearly rolled.
Kailey’s stare narrowed. “What are you actually trying to say p>
Hesitation slowed him before the truth came out. “It’s nothing serious. Quentin told me yesterday that I should treat you better. I never thought I was cruel to you, but I suppose I can improve. Tell me if you want food or entertainment, and I’ll handle it p>
Shock emptied Kailey’s expression. “Have you lost your mind p>
Benny dug a pen and a scrap of paper from his bag. “I’m in a rare good mood, so I’m not fighting with you today. Call me if you want something.” When she said nothing, he acted on his own and tucked the paper into her pocket without asking.
