For a moment, Kailey had no idea how to respond.
About half an hour passed before her phone buzzed with a photo from Kyson. The image showed a table surrounded by a group of broad, rough-looking men, not a woman anywhere in sight.
Before she could type anything, a voice message followed. “Don’t overthink it. I’m not the kind of person who lies or plays games. I’ll always tell you things honestly, and you can check on me whenever you want p>
Kailey stared at the screen, her thoughts drifting. Why was Kyson suddenly explaining himself like this? Was he bothered because she seemed controlling? But she hadn’t asked for anything at all. The more she turned it over, the more certain she became that he simply didn’t want her interfering with his work.
With a small nod to herself, she decided not to reply and tossed her phone aside.
Back at the dinner table, Kyson frowned when no response came through.
One of the partners noticed his distraction and filled his glass to the brim with a laugh. “Mr. Blake, you seem miles away tonight. Missing your girlfriend p>
Kyson slipped his phone back into his pocket, a faint trace of private pride moving through his eyes, though his tone came out apologetic. “Sorry about that. She keeps a close watch on me. I’ll stick to water tonight p>

Someone else raised his glass and leaned toward Kyson. “Now you have my attention. What kind of woman managed to hold onto you like this p>
“That’s right,” another urged. “What’s her name? Maybe she comes from a family we all know p>
Surrounded by familiar faces, Kyson lifted his glass and answered without hesitation. “Her name is Kailey Evans. She doesn’t come from any prestigious background, but she is the most important person in my life. One day, when the timing is right, I hope we can all share a meal together p>
Just outside the private room, Ryan slowed to a stop. The name seemed to linger in the air.
