She looped her arms around his neck, surrounded by the scent she knew so well. For a moment, she held him as if she had finally reached a place where she could rest.
“Did someone upset you?” Kyson guided her onto the desk and braced his hands on either side of her, keeping her within his reach. “Tell me who it is. I’ll handle it p>
She studied his face, then slowly shook her head. “I’m just tired,” she said, yet the words didn’t come close to explaining what weighed on her.
There was something dark about Candice. Kailey knew it, but all she could do was stay out of her way — she couldn’t simply confront her or teach her a lesson.

Kyson didn’t answer right away. His eyes grew distant as if he were thinking something through, and his hand moved gently through her hair. Within his arms, the world seemed smaller — quiet and safe, as if nothing beyond that room could reach her.

Ever since she married him, it felt like her heart had something guarding it. She couldn’t quite put it into words, but she believed that with him beside her, any problem could be solved.
She stayed downstairs for a while longer before heading back up, her mood lightened by then. She ate something, took a shower, and went to bed.
Deep into the night, the quiet shattered when her phone started ringing.
Kailey stirred and reached across the bed, only to realize Kyson wasn’t there. The phone beneath her pillow kept vibrating insistently. She pushed her hair back, sat up, and answered the call.

A problem with an overseas project had forced Kyson to rush to the company in the middle of the night. By the time he returned, dawn had already broken and the clock was nearing six.
He moved up the stairs without making a sound and stepped into the bedroom. Then he stopped short.
At first glance, nothing looked different, yet something felt wrong. The bed was empty. A single note rested on the vanity. His brows drew together as he walked over and picked it up.
