“You’re home?” she asked sleepily, stifling a yawn as she pushed herself upright. “I got too caught up studying. Did you eat p>
“A little,” Kyson replied, settling onto the couch and drawing her up beside him. “Are you hungry p>
“No. I already finished two packs of snacks p>
Both of them had been overwhelmed with work lately, leaving little opportunity to cook at home. The situation had been weighing on Kyson, and he raised the idea carefully. “How would you feel about having someone help around the house? If you’re comfortable with it, I could arrange for a housekeeper to come cook when I’m not here p>
The suggestion caught Kailey off guard. “I can take care of myself p>

Her lips pressed together. She had no response to that.
A faint smile crossed Kyson’s lips. “It would be the same housekeeper we had before. My parents are still abroad, and I think she’d be glad to come back p>
Something clicked in Kailey’s memory. Kyson’s family had once had a live-in housekeeper who had gone abroad with them.

“That’s right,” Kyson answered, visibly surprised. “You still remember her p>
“How could I forget?” Kailey puffed out her cheeks. “Every time I came over and you refused to feed me, Karol would secretly slip me snacks p>
A smile tugged at Kyson’s lips. “Then we’ll ask Karol to come back. It’s been a long time. I miss her too p>
That same evening, he booked Karol’s flight and arranged for her return the following day.
When Kyson’s parents heard about it, they raised no objections—though his mother, Irene Blake, couldn’t resist adding a complaint. “So Karol’s coming back already. When are we going to meet our future daughter-in-law? Kyson, you really shouldn’t be showing such favoritism p>
His mother’s words didn’t catch Kyson off guard. All he could do was rub the bridge of his nose in quiet resignation. “Mom, give Kailey some time to settle in first p>
“Settle in with you, or with us?” Irene shot back with mild irritation. “I think you’re the one keeping her away. Kailey is adorable. I’m sure she misses me p>
“I meant adjusting to our new relationship. I would get the marriage certificate with her first, and then we’d come see you,” Kyson replied, keeping his tone measured.
Still unsatisfied, Irene muttered a few more complaints before hanging up.
Kyson stood by the study window, switched off his phone, and looked out at the glowing city below. His thoughts drifted to the girl sleeping down the hall, and warmth spread through his chest—soft and overwhelming, as if something in him were quietly giving way.
Kailey would soon be his wife. He had carried that expectation for a long time, and it had only grown heavier with patience.
Winter in the north was unforgiving, yet the steady warmth from the heating made the cold almost forgettable.
