Once dinner was over, Kyson headed into the kitchen to handle the cleanup. Meanwhile, Kailey settled on the couch and spread out the design drafts Dana had returned, lightly chewing on the end of her pen as she thought things through.
Not long after, Kyson stepped out of the kitchen and noticed her curled on the couch, head lowered, a strand of hair slipping forward to frame her face. Under the dim lighting, she looked almost unreal. He paused to watch her quietly before moving closer. “Running into any problems p>
Lifting her head, Kailey pulled the pen from her mouth. “Not really. I’m just confused. Dana said she showed these drafts to the boss, so why did she give them back to me? Is there something wrong with them?” She couldn’t come up with any other explanation, yet now that she looked at them again, everything seemed fine.
A flicker of guilt passed through Kyson, quickly hidden as he raised an eyebrow. “Have you considered that she might never have shown them at all p>

“Yeah.” To back up his point, Kyson picked up the drafts and examined them carefully before speaking with sincerity. “Your designs stand out. They’re nothing like the mass-produced pieces flooding the market. No boss would turn them down p>
Hearing such straightforward praise left Kailey feeling a little bashful, though a smile still crept onto her lips. “Alright. I’ll take them to Linda tomorrow. If there are any issues, we can talk it through then p>
The following morning, Kailey headed straight to Linda’s office and placed the design drafts in her hands. To her surprise, Linda clearly had not seen them before, and she spent a long time complimenting the work before finally letting Kailey leave.

Even so, something about Linda’s reaction lingered uneasily in Kailey’s mind. The enthusiasm had felt almost excessive. Stepping out of the office, she shook her head lightly, trying to brush the thought away. Maybe she was overthinking it. After all, Linda had always been fond of her designs.
As the workday ended, Linda announced a staffing decision. From that point forward, the design team would be led by Zaria, and anyone with objections was free to take them up with her in private. With that statement, Zaria’s promotion became final, leaving no room for dispute.
The announcement left everyone stunned — Zaria included.

After three years at the company, Zaria was already regarded as a senior member of the design department, and her competence had never been in question. Promoting her to team lead made perfect sense. Even so, the sudden timing caught her off guard, especially with the quarterly designs still unfinished and countless details waiting to be resolved.
