The speaker immediately realized the remark was ill-timed and tried to walk it back, but the words had already landed. Thankfully, a colleague jumped in to smooth things over, and the mood slowly grew lighter. Watching the room ease into laughter, Kailey finally relaxed. By now, she already thought of Zaria as a true friend and had no desire to see her feel even a hint of awkwardness.

“Yes. Our new team leader is hosting, and she said family can join p>
Kyson paused over the screen, trying to read between the lines. Was she actually hoping he would come? After a brief moment, he replied, “I still have work to wrap up. I’ll come pick you up once I’m done, alright p>
Just as the message went through, Devin stepped into the office. “Mr. Blake, everyone’s ready. The video meeting can begin p>

Kyson picked up his phone again and sent one more line. “Going into a meeting. Call me if you need anything p>
When Kailey read it, she showed the screen to Zaria. “See? I knew he wouldn’t be free. Maybe next time, when his schedule is lighter, we can invite him p>
Zaria’s disappointment was plain. “Okay.” She gave Kailey a sideways look and added, “I was really curious to see just how handsome your fiancé is p>
Unaware of what Zaria was really thinking, Kailey murmured, “He’s handsome in a way that’s hard to describe p>
A flicker crossed Zaria’s eyes, though she chose not to comment.
The dinner didn’t end until after nine. Since Kyson hadn’t sent anything, Kailey assumed he was still tied up with work. She messaged him before hailing a cab home.
When she arrived, Kyson’s car was nowhere to be seen. She stepped inside and was immediately met with sounds drifting from the kitchen. Caught off guard, Kailey rushed to the entryway cabinet, grabbed a baseball bat, and crept forward carefully.
