The question landed unexpectedly, leaving her momentarily unprepared. She had no clear memories or emotions tied to her uncle, even though he was her only remaining blood relative in the world. After pausing to think it through, she answered honestly. “I don’t really have strong feelings about him. He never showed up after my family’s accident. So why bother now? That said, I’m not blaming anyone. I think everyone living their own lives like this is perfectly fine p>
Hearing her words, Sawyer felt a wave of relief. Both he and Aleena had worried that Kailey might carry resentment, but her response made it clear their fears were unnecessary.
“Aleena should have mentioned before that your uncle is holding onto an inheritance your mother left behind, and he wants to give it to you himself p>
Absentmindedly, Kailey traced the pattern on the couch cushion. “Yes, she did mention that.” Aleena had also told her that her uncle hoped to meet her in person.
“Your uncle has already returned to the country,” Sawyer continued. “Aleena shared your contact information with him, so he’ll probably get in touch with you soon p>
After the call ended, Kailey was lost in thought for a long while, struggling to fully steady herself. Even after Kyson came home, she remained curled up on the couch, hugging a cushion while her thoughts drifted elsewhere.
“What’s wrong?” Kyson asked, his voice low with concern, as he walked over and reached out to gently ruffle her hair. “You seem upset p>
“It’s not that I’m upset,” Kailey said quietly, propping her chin on the cushion as she looked up at him. “It’s just that an uncle suddenly showed up and wants to meet me, and I don’t know what I’m supposed to do p>

“Exactly. He’s my mom’s brother, but he moved overseas with his family when I was really young, so I barely remember him. Now he’s saying Mom left something for me. An inheritance p>

“I can’t say for sure,” she added. “I can’t tell if he genuinely wants to give me what Mom left behind, or if there’s something else he wants.” With no memories to anchor that relationship, Kailey hoped nothing would come along to damage the already fragile bond they shared by blood.
Kyson reached for her hand and settled it firmly in his own. “Whatever his reasons are, since he’s made an appearance, we should treat him with the courtesy owed to family. If anything feels off later, I’m right here p>
