With the distance closed, Kailey caught the clean scent of soap lingering around him, and her breathing faltered slightly. “Alright,” she agreed. How was she supposed to refuse? Did he really not realize how distracting his voice was?

After a brief blink, Kailey finally lifted her eyes to his face. His sharp features looked composed and healthy, without any obvious signs of fatigue. Still, she asked with concern, “Is it because of work p>

Kailey’s breathing faltered, and a sudden tightness gripped her chest. One more question might lead to an answer she had never prepared herself to hear. For reasons she could not explain, fear stopped her from asking anything further.

Kyson narrowly avoided being hit. Staring at the wooden door in front of him, he let out a low, dry laugh. “You couldn’t even wait for me to finish p>
Inside the room, Kailey pressed her back against the door. Something strange took hold of her, and for a brief moment, her thoughts felt completely out of her control. If Kyson truly had feelings for someone else, wasn’t that perfectly reasonable? So then — why had he chosen to marry her?
Kailey fixed her gaze on the wall across from her, thinking in circles until a single explanation settled in. Kyson might not have been able to be with the person he loved, and under pressure from his family, he had chosen her instead. Perhaps the person he cared about already belonged to someone else.
Pressing her lips together, Kailey became convinced she had pieced it all together. In any case, Kyson had done so much for her. If he truly liked someone and wanted her advice or understanding, she could accept that as well. After all, who ever said marriage had to be built on love? A bond rooted in kinship could work just as well. An arrangement based on mutual support was acceptable too.
Once she reached that conclusion, Kailey released a long breath. With it, the indistinct emotions that had been quietly stirring inside her seemed to dissolve, losing their shape and fading away.
The next morning arrived early, and Kailey was already awake. Karol was in the kitchen preparing breakfast and looked surprised to see her fully dressed. “Up this early on a Saturday, Kailey. Do you have plans p>
“I need to step out for a bit,” Kailey replied with a gentle smile as she moved closer to watch Karol cook.
