Her sentence cut off when her phone started ringing on the table. With the sandwich still in her hand, Kailey sprang to her feet. “My ride’s here. Take your time with breakfast. Bye, Karol. Bye, Kyson p>
Kyson froze, staring at the empty space she left behind. Had she just walked off like that?
Once seated in the car, Kailey looked back as the villa slipped out of view and released a long breath. Knowing Kyson cared about someone else, she decided it would be wiser to keep her distance from him moving forward.
After their call, Lionel had sent over the meeting address. Kailey checked it and recognized it as a highly rated private restaurant. Places like that prized discretion, which also meant she would be meeting them without any buffer. As the car drew nearer, the unease she had pushed down began to creep back in.

There was no turning back now. When the driver announced they had arrived, her heart gave a sudden, sharp jump.

Once the self-encouragement was over, she quickly scanned her surroundings to make sure no one was watching. Fortunately, there was no one in sight. This was childish. Straightening her hair, Kailey set her jaw and walked inside with firm, deliberate steps.

Before Kailey could fully collect herself, the door swung open. She paused, held her breath, and lifted her eyes.
Rising from the table, Lionel looked genuinely pleased. “Kailey.” He gave his daughter a brief pat — a trace of dissatisfaction crossing his face — then turned back with a warm smile. “I thought you might arrive later. Otherwise, I would have gone out to greet you. Come in and sit with Dagmar p>
A tightness formed in Kailey’s throat, but after a short pause, she managed a polite smile. “Uncle p>
“Good girl!” Lionel’s excitement only grew as he somewhat awkwardly pulled out a chair beside his daughter, Dagmar Ward. “Sit down. There’s no rush — we can talk slowly. My wife had something come up today, but she asked me to pass along her greetings. Once the housing matters are settled, you’ll have to visit and try her cooking. She makes wonderful dishes p>
Kailey was just about to respond when Dagmar let out a short scoff and muttered quietly, “Wonderful cooking? You’ve only tried it twice. I have no idea how you came to that conclusion p>
