Devin felt a chill run through him at the look on his boss’s face. It had the quiet promise of someone who had already decided how this would end.
Trouble was coming for someone.
Kailey woke up parched, dragged herself out of bed, and spotted a glass of water on the nightstand. She grabbed it and drank in long, desperate gulps. After licking her lips and taking a few steadying breaths, she set the empty glass aside and collapsed back onto the mattress.
She stared at the shadowy ceiling above, lost in thought. Who was she? Where was she? What had happened last night? Right — she had gone drinking with Felicity.
Kailey shut her eyes for a moment, then quickly opened them again. Something didn’t feel right. They had gone to a bar last night, hadn’t they? Then why was she waking up in a bedroom?
She shot upright, patted herself to make sure her clothes were still on, and quickly scanned her surroundings. It took a few seconds to realize she was in her own room. Had Felicity brought her back? She nibbled at her lip, mind spinning, every thought wrapped in heavy mist. Minutes slipped by while she sat there in a haze, her memory completely blank.
Kailey tugged at her hair, convinced she was forgetting something important. But what?
By then, morning light had spilled into the room, painting the sky outside in soft streaks — warm yellow fading into gentle blue, shifting into cool gray. It was a sight both beautiful and surreal. She rested against the headboard, eyes drifting to the window, but no matter how long she watched, her memory stayed blank. Drowsiness slowly pulled her back in. Might as well close her eyes again. Perhaps everything would click into place once she woke up.
But clarity didn’t come. Her second sleep brought a nightmare instead. She dreamed about hiring a male escort and being caught by Kyson, who hauled her out. She jerked awake, drenched in sweat, and needed a few moments before dragging herself off the bed to retrieve her phone from the couch.

“Whatever happens, happens,” she whispered to herself, jaw clenched. Deciding there was no point in worrying, she chose to shower first. She would face Kyson when she had to. If things went badly enough, he might even call off their engagement.
Weighed down by dread, she lingered under the warm spray before finally making her way downstairs.
