Kailey lifted her eyes and looked straight at his unfairly handsome face, her expression completely unmoved. “Benny, you’ve got the wrong idea. I helped Quentin by picking you up and dropping you at the hotel. That’s where it ends. We’re not family, and anything you ask from me beyond that is extra. Do you get it p>
He muttered something under his breath, too quiet for her to catch.
“What did you say?” she asked.
“Nothing.” He scratched his nose, suddenly avoiding her eyes. When he spoke again, his voice had lost its earlier edge. “I just don’t like being by myself. I wanted to eat with you, that’s it. And you talked way too much. You sounded like a parent lecturing me p>
With his shoulders slumped and his tone dulled, he looked strangely pitiful.
Kailey frowned. For a second, she wondered if she’d pushed him too hard. Even so, her schedule wasn’t negotiable. She paused, then asked, “Do you really have to eat together p>
Benny nodded without hesitation.
Against her better judgment, a hint of sympathy crept in. “Then wait until I’m done with work p>
She turned and went back to her desk. He stood there for a moment, then slowly walked back to the lounge and dropped onto the couch, continuing to play on his phone, his posture carrying the air of someone who’d been unfairly treated.
Kailey let out a long sigh and called the front desk. “The boy in the lounge is my friend’s brother. Please order him something to eat. Keep it light — no spicy food p>
After ending the call, she laughed quietly at herself. Shaking off the tangled feelings, she opened her laptop and headed into a meeting.
By the time it ended, it was almost noon.
When she stepped out, she spotted him in nearly the same spot on the couch. He toyed with his phone without focus, his eyes distant and blank. The food containers beside him were empty.
Kailey walked over. “Are you still hungry p>
He jumped when he heard her voice and immediately got to his feet. “Hungry or not, it’s already lunchtime, right? Come on. I’ll treat you p>
Kailey gave him a look but didn’t comment.
They went downstairs together. The moment Benny spotted the Maserati, his eyes lit up. He hurried over and ran his hand along the smooth surface like he’d just discovered buried treasure. “This is a limited edition. The engine setup isn’t the same as the standard version. Kailey, let me drive p>
She didn’t know much about cars, but she wasn’t about to trust him that easily. “Do you even have a license p>
“Obviously.” Benny puffed up and pulled a license out of his bag. “I got it early p>
