Ryan swallowed, but nothing came out.
“Are you saying that every man who gets close to me only wants my body? That their promises are just empty words? That once they’ve had their fill, they’ll walk away and leave me broken?” He had told her similar things before. Back then, she had believed him—she thought he was protecting her.
“But you’ve hurt me too,” she added quietly.
If that was the standard, then there was no real difference. Men could be selfish; some hid it better than others. Whether they gave in to it depended on who they chose to be. To Kailey, Kyson was the most decent man she had ever known.
Ryan’s jaw tightened. Strands of hair fell over his eyes, hiding whatever was brewing inside them. The air around him felt heavy, as though he were fighting a battle no one else could see.
