Panic flared in her wide eyes as she struggled to twist around and identify her attacker, but the crushing grip left her nearly immobile. Through the blur of fear, she managed to make out only a pair of neatly pressed school-uniform trousers and those unmistakable shoes.
The boy’s breathing came out uneven and rough. Tight veins bulged along his forearm, the muscles quivering as if barely restraining some savage surge beneath his skin.
Kailey recognized him — Lyman — and the recognition eased her terror for a fleeting second, only for dread to crash back down when he suddenly leaned in. Lowering his head, he sank his teeth into the curve of her neck, the gesture hovering somewhere between a twisted kiss and a desperate bite.
Paralyzed where she stood, Kailey barely dared to inhale, heat flooding her eyes as tears slipped down her temples.
Despite his youthful face, an alarming strength coiled through his body. One hand clamped firmly over her lips while the other moved behind her, his hoarse breaths echoing like the mournful cry of something not entirely human. She stiffened completely, too frightened to make the slightest movement.
Time dragged in suffocating silence, each minute stretched thin and endless.
At last, the faint rustling faded, leaving only a heavy stillness in its wake. Rigid as stone, Kailey remained where she was, fear soaking through her as tears slid unchecked down her trembling cheeks.
“Kailey.” His voice scraped out hoarsely, rough and uneven.
When she turned her head with painful slowness, sweat glistened across his face the same way it clung to hers. Bloodshot veins webbed through his eyes, the familiar frost in his gaze shattered and replaced by a disturbingly raw vulnerability. Yet none of it registered — Kailey only stood there, stunned and numb, her mind blank with shock.
