He spotted her, said a few words to the people beside him, and headed straight in her direction. When he reached her, he removed his helmet and settled it carefully onto her head. “Next time, wait at the entrance. This area isn’t safe p>
“I’ll watch my step,” Kailey said, her eyes shining as he adjusted the strap under her chin. “Are you finished? If not, I can wait somewhere nearby p>

“I’ll stay right here until you’re done,” she cut in quickly.
“Alright.” He brushed a loose strand of hair away from her face. “Be careful. If you get bored, go sit in the car p>
After he walked away, Kailey turned and made her way toward the exit.
She had barely reached the side path when she ran straight into Benny. Why was he here again? He popped up wherever he pleased, like trouble that refused to stay put.
Kailey looked at him briefly and kept walking, offering no greeting.
Benny folded his arms across his chest. When she drew near, he fixed her with a cold stare. “What are you doing here p>
“Do I need to explain myself to you?” Kailey shot back. “I haven’t asked why you’re here p>
“I was bored. I came to look around.” The sunlight made his features look less severe, yet his voice carried the same bite. “Afraid someone’s going to steal Kyson while you’re not watching? Feeling nervous p>
Kailey rolled her eyes and chose not to argue.
Just as she stepped past him, his expression changed.
“Watch out!” he shouted.
Her thoughts went blank. In the next second, he grabbed her and pulled her against him. A brick slammed onto the ground right where she had been standing. If he hadn’t moved, it would have struck her head.
“Are you okay?” Kailey steadied herself and quickly stepped back, reaching out to check his back.
His face had gone pale. Even so, his usual scowl returned in full force. “I’m fine. What’s wrong with you? Can’t you pay attention when you walk? You were heading straight into danger. Did you forget to bring your brain with you p>
His sharp words left her without a response. She had only shifted aside so she wouldn’t block the workers — if he hadn’t yelled, she would have walked past safely.
