He opened his mouth as if to say something, then swallowed the words. A quiet curse slipped out instead before he turned and walked away.
Kailey stood there and watched him leave, confusion settling in her chest. Didn’t he hate her? Then why had he stepped in to protect her?
At first, Kailey assumed Benny had rushed off to complain to Kyson again. Yet ten minutes later, Kyson walked out alone.
She glanced toward the building behind him and frowned. “Didn’t Benny come to see you p>
“Why would he?” Kyson closed the car door and buckled his seatbelt. “If he bothers you, don’t entertain him p>
So Benny hadn’t said a word this time? That surprised Kailey. It wasn’t like him to stay quiet.
She hesitated, then brought up what had happened. “A brick fell from that height. It had to hurt when it hit him. Maybe you should call and check on him p>
Kyson gave her a brief look. “Since when are you worried about him? I thought you couldn’t stand him p>
“It’s not like that.” Kailey lowered her gaze to her hands. “He did save me today p>

By now, Kailey couldn’t focus on anything else. All she wanted was to receive the package Felicity had mentioned and figure out how to ease his frustration.
Kyson drove to a bar as if he’d done it countless times before and went straight upstairs. Downstairs was loud and crowded, but the second floor was different — private rooms lined the hallway, and the doors blocked out almost all the noise.
He spotted the man right away. Benny sat alone on the couch, turning an empty glass in his hand as if lost in thought. The careless edge he once carried had faded over the years. What remained was something quieter and harder to read.
Kyson had never been particularly fond of him. What started as a simple favor had become a lingering complication, and he had always disliked complications. Yet Benny kept finding reasons to stick close, and gradually Kyson had come to see him as a younger brother.
