She gave a short, dismissive laugh, tugged Max away, and turned her back on him.
Lyman didn’t speak. His gaze followed her retreating figure, and against the lush scenery, his expression looked even harder to read.
Walking Max was the only moment Kailey felt even slightly free. She stayed in the garden with him for nearly an hour, and by the time she returned, the sun had warmed her skin and left a faint flush across her cheeks.
