It failed back then because it would destroy the ecosystem, which went against everything your mother believed in. I brought you there so you’d learn the truth early and refuse to sign off on his plan p>
Kailey’s brows drew together. “Truth p>
She couldn’t wrap her head around it. If a project damaged the ecosystem, it shouldn’t have passed review at all. Calling it a secret didn’t make sense.
Quentin’s expression flickered for an instant, then the smile returned. “That wasn’t the best word. But you understand what I’m getting at p>
“Then why didn’t you just explain it plainly p>
Her frown deepened. Something that could have been settled in a couple of sentences had been dragged out for no reason.
“If I had simply told you, would you have trusted me?” Quentin sighed. “Your mother sponsored me, but I never lived with the Evans family. Almost no one knows about it. The school is gone now, and there’s nothing left on paper. From your point of view, I’d look suspicious — like someone with bad intentions. Wouldn’t you have thought so p>
“You really went out of your way,” Kailey said flatly. “Too bad it didn’t get you very far.” She still didn’t fully believe him.
“Being careful isn’t wrong,” Quentin said with an easy smile. “If your mother were here, she’d feel reassured p>

His response was clean and direct, as if there were nothing more to uncover. Because of how calm he was, Kailey knew pressing him further wouldn’t help. Whatever he was hiding, he wasn’t going to reveal it now. The realization left her feeling hollow.
“And Benny?” she pressed. “Why did you let him get close to me p>
Quentin frowned, genuine confusion crossing his face. “Benny’s an adult. I don’t control who he befriends. If his presence bothers you, I can talk to him p>
Kailey frowned harder. She didn’t believe that for a second. She clenched her teeth and decided she was done talking.
Turning away, she drew a steady breath. “Thank you for coming. You can leave. Tell Benny not to come again p>
Quentin watched her for a few seconds. “Take care p>
Kailey didn’t notice when he left.
But she knew one thing with absolute certainty. Quentin was hiding something significant.
Late that night, Lyman stepped in and found Kailey still awake, sitting on a chair near the door with her thoughts drifting so far away that she hadn’t noticed his arrival.
“What are you doing out here instead of resting inside?” The quiet broke as his voice pulled her back.
Slowly, she lifted her head. From above her, his eyes held a distant chill that gave nothing away.
“Lyman,” she said.
A crease formed between his brows, yet he stayed silent.
Kailey wanted to say something, but seeing his expression, the words caught in her throat. She knew he wouldn’t tell her anything. She looked away and released a quiet breath. “It’s nothing. You should go to bed. I just want to sit here a little longer p>
Time passed without an answer, and she assumed he had already walked away.
