With that matter settled, Kailey once again had nothing pressing to occupy her time. All that remained was waiting.
For the next two days, she stayed mostly within the villa, drifting between the garden and her bedroom.
Before Shawn returned with any findings, however, an unwelcome visitor arrived instead.
Candice acted as though she owned the place. She settled comfortably on the couch and instructed the maid to bring her a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice.
“Why are you staring at me like that?” She noticed Kailey’s tightly drawn brows and shrugged with smug indifference. “Lyman and I are business partners. Is it really so strange for me to drink some juice at his house p>
“It isn’t strange.” Kailey forced civility into her voice. “But Lyman is at work right now. If you came here for his juice, you should be at the office — not here p>
“And if I came to see you instead p>
“Then I might poison your drink p>
Candice laughed and casually tossed an invitation onto the coffee table. “Honestly, Kailey, if fate hadn’t made us enemies, I might actually admire you. You’re sharp-tongued, and your resilience is genuinely impressive.” She waved a hand vaguely. “Look at your situation — confined here, divorced — yet you seem completely unaffected. I’m curious. Don’t you feel miserable at all p>
“What kind of misery are you hoping for?” Kailey scoffed. “Or would you rather see me dead p>
She had never claimed many virtues, but one thing she refused to do was torment herself over other people’s choices.

Kailey felt a surge of irritation and decided any further exchange was pointless. “If you have nothing else to do here, you should leave. It’s quite obvious you’re not welcome p>
“I noticed.” Candice smiled brightly and pushed the invitation closer. “But read that first. I think you’ll find it worth your attention p>
She had imagined Kailey’s reaction many times — the thrill of watching her break, almost intoxicating in its appeal. Instead, reality disappointed her.
Kailey neither cried nor lost control. She showed no reaction at all.
She scanned the invitation for only a couple of seconds, then looked up calmly. “I’ve seen it. You can go now p>
Candice stared at her in disbelief. “That’s it p>
Kailey’s gaze remained cold and detached.
“So you’re not coming?” Candice pressed.
That question finally drew a short, mocking laugh from Kailey. She tossed the invitation back.
